MIT Media Lab Director, a member of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Center of Innovation (COI) STREAM governance committee, a Visiting Executive Researcher of Keio Research Institute and the Internet & Society Lab. He has created numerous Internet companies including PSINet Japan, Digital Garage and Infoseek Japan and was an early-stage investor in Twitter, Wikia, Flickr, Kickstarter, Path, LittleBits, Formlabs and other companies
In 2011 he was chosen by Foreign Policy Magazine as one of the "Top 100 Global Thinkers".
In 2011 and 2012, Ito was chosen by Nikkei Business as one of the 100 most influential people for the future of Japan.
In 2011, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oxford Internet.
In 2015, Ito was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, from Tufts University.
