For a week in the spring of 2012, CBC-TVs Mark Kelley decided to go back to high school in Gatineau, Quebec to get a firsthand look at the problem of bullying. By focusing on one school - and by sparking a dialogue there, we created a documentary that sparked a national conversation. With unique and rare access, we challenged the kids to speak up and share their heartbreaking stories in one on one interviews, and in a "Bully Booth" where more than 150 students spoke directly to camera sharing raw and honest stories from all perspectives - the bullies, the bullied, as well as the students and the teachers.

In 2005 Emad's son, Gibreel is born; it's then that he gets his first camera. At the same time in his village, a separation barrier is being built by Israel on the villagers cultivated lands and they begin to resist this decision. Night raids by the army and arrests in the village scare his family. His friends, brothers and even he are either shot or arrested. One camera after another is shot or smashed. Each camera unfolds a part his story. Eventually, Emad joins forces with Israeli filmmaker, Guy Davidi and together they create a powerful piece of work.

NINJA & SOLDIER

  • Entering organization:BRAVO FILM
  • Japan
  • TV /Film/Video

Two 8-year old boys are having a conversation. Ken, born in Japan, is dressed in a ninja costume. Nito, born in Congo, Africa, is a child soldier. Nito was forced to kill his own mother, ordered by a soldier. Boys start speaking about "differences" between themselves.

When one becomes conscious of a difference between others and themselves in a negative way, discrimination begins. This leads to hostility towards each other, progressing into a war which people kill each other. A child soldier problem happening in Congo is not some unrelated issue happening far away in Africa. It is actually a problem about ourselves. I hope this film provides an opportunity for viewers to become aware about child soldiers, to raise its awareness between Japanese people. I wish for teenagers to view this work as well, an age group which interpersonal problem such as bullying can easily turn into a tragedy.

The Universe at Our Feet

The natural world is teeming with active life-forms. Even familiar plants and flowers engage in astonishingly energetic actions and behaviors. Plant photographer Ciabou Hany (Shabo Hani), 82 years old, has devoted his career to close observation of the minute glories of plant life. He shows us a water droplet nestled like a jewel in the leaves of a cypress seedling...field horsetail spores dancing under a microscope...the stamens of the tiny katenso, hurling their pollen into the air like pitching machines. Hany takes us into his garden, or on morning walks, where he crawls on the ground or lies down amidst his beloved plants to record the drama of these diminutive creatures, which exist all around us but which we so often overlook. Ordinarily we think of plants as stationary, immobile. Hany's lens reveals to us a fantastic world of drama and movement. Watching this program makes us realize just how full of life and action our entire world is, even amongst the commonest plants of our immediate environment. In some cases, their beauty takes our breath away; in others, their lively behaviors bring smiles to our lips. We follow Hany over the course of a year, as he helps us appreciate the nobility of even the tiniest life-forms amongst us, and the magic of a wondrous universe that lies at our very feet.

The Age of Media

  • Entering organization:Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company (UR)
  • Sweden
  • TV /Film/Video

We are there. On the island. Utoya. Three months have passed since Anders Behring Breivik murdered 69 persons there, most of them young people. We meet one of the survivors, Jorid Nordmelan, who was 20 years old in the summer of 2011. That summer changed her entire life. In this programme we will hear the stories of the survivors, but also of those who worked with the media coverage of the massacre. Many of the reports included elements of testimonies by teenagers who survived by hiding or swimming, many had seen their friends die. How do you handle such a difficult situation as a journalist? Which pictures can you use and make available for distribution all over the world? What can be charatcterized as being of interest to the larger public, and what is just used for selling more? The ethical rules of journalism are very central in a time where we both consume and produce more and more media. We have a fantastic opportunity to make our voices heard, but we also need to be aware of what the consequences of what we publish can be. The educational aim of the programme is to stir emotion and thoughts, in order to fuel a constructive and inspired discussion about press ethics and about what kind of content young people themselves publish on social media. By giving the programme an educational context we ensure that teachers can use it easily and effectively.

MISSION US: "Flight to Freedom"

  • Entering organization:Thirteen WNET
  • United States
  • Game

"Flight to Freedom", is the second in a series of free, innovative online role-playing games designed to transform the way middle school students learn history. Players take on the role of Lucy King, a fictional 14-year-old enslaved on a Kentucky plantation in 1848. After navigating Lucys escape and journey to Ohio via the Underground Railroad, players discover that life in the "free" North is dangerous and difficult.

Part of an initiative by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to evaluate the potential benefits of digital history games for student learning, MISSION US was developed to address a pressing need to engage middle school students in history in more effective ways. In the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress, only 17% of eighth graders performed at or above the Proficient level in United States history. MISSION US aims to turn the tide, getting kids to care about history by seeing it through the eyes of peers from the past.

"Flight to Freedom" helps students learn how enslaved peoples choices - from small, everyday acts of resistance to action that sought an end to slavery - affected the lives of individuals, and ultimately the nation. As students play the interactive game and participate in related classroom discussions and activities, they build and strengthen critical thinking and problem solving skills such as effective reasoning, systematic thinking, decision making and effective communication. The game also supports students' knowledge and 21st century skills in applying technology effectively.
