Story

"Haru-san House" is a share house in Tokyo, bringing together people of various nationalities and personalities.
Their common language is Japanese. And the landlady who handles the problems of the residents is actually a robot!
One day, a Vietnamese student, Tam, moves in.
The story is about Tam as she travels around Japan with her housemates, while learning Japanese and following her dreams.

Nguyen My Tam

グエン・ミイ・タム

Tam, a Vietnamese student, learned about "Haru-san House" from a friend who had lived there. So, when she came to Japan, she decided to make that her home too. Her character is bright and gentle but firm. In high school, she was active in volunteering. Now, she studies at a Japanese university majoring in tourism studies. Her favorite color is pink, and she loves playing with cats. Her childhood dream was to be a veterinarian. She met someone special while volunteering in Vietnam. Who might that be?

Mi Ya

ミー・ヤー

Mi Ya is a freelance photographer from China. She’s been introducing the sights and stories of Japan to people in her home country through pictures. Her Instagram account has legions of followers, and she’s become an influential figure. Mi Ya prides herself on being stylish and having good sense. She aims to eventually publish her photos in book form. In "Haru-san House," she is like an older sister to Tam.

Iwamoto Kaito

岩元海斗(いわもと・かいと)

Kaito is a Japanese university student. He is a resident of "Haru-san House" and loves food. In fact, his cooking skills are at the professional level. When he was four years old, he astounded his family by skillfully making a decorated birthday cake. He’s a warmhearted guy who’s willing to lend a hand whenever a friend needs some help. Kaito is studying restaurant management. He’s become a big brother type figure to Tam.

Mike Hudson

マイク・ハドソン

Mike is an American graduate student at a medical school in Japan. He used to live at "Haru-san House" and still comes by to visit and talk with current residents. When he was a child, he happened to see a ninja movie. That got him interested in Japan, and he’s become a big fan of the country’s culture. When he first arrived, he had a hard time with the language. The landlady, Haru, got him through the rough spots.

Honda Ayaka

本田あやか(ほんだ・あやか)

Ayaka, from Japan, is an education student at the university that Tam attends. They get along well and often go out on excursions and adventures. Ayaka’s full of energy and a bit nosy, like a well-meaning aunt. With a unique sense of fashion, she scours secondhand clothing stores. Her hairbands instantly make her stand out from the crowd. She hopes to become a professional childcare worker.

Hoshi Yuuki

星悠輝(ほし・ゆうき)

Yuuki, from Japan, is a pianist. Chopin is in his repertoire, and he’s studied in the composer’s country, Poland. Yuuki is committed to volunteer activities and has performed at elementary schools in several Asian countries. He’s sincere and kind, and his style is both passionate and delicate.

Haru

はる

Haru, the landlady, is a robot animated by artificial intelligence that translates into common sense. She extends the Japanese spirit of hospitality and dispenses advice freely, even venturing into matters of the heart. Haru-san House conversations take place in Japanese. However, her programming allows her to speak any language in the world. Because she runs on solar power, she can be a bit weak in the morning.

About Easy Japanese

"Easy Japanese" is a learning program offered in 18 languages by NHK WORLD-JAPAN, the international broadcasting service of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation).

The 48-part series features fun skits that form an extended story. Listeners can learn handy and easy-to-use phrases for self-introductions, shopping, and many other situations. The program is also rich with tourist information as well as insights into Japanese culture and manners.

This program meets the "JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education (JFS)" set by the Japan Foundation. (jfstandard.jp)* The program emphasizes communication skills in Japanese in everyday situations and fosters understanding and respect for different cultures.

The series is designed for JFS A1-A2 level learners. A1 learners are those who can understand basic expressions in everyday life and engage in very simple daily conversations. A2 learners can conduct simple daily conversations on familiar subjects. The level classifications are based on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).

Supervisors

Fujinaga Kaoru
Lecturer, The Japan Foundation*, Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa

Fujinaga has devoted many years to training Japanese teachers working abroad. Fujinaga and her colleage, Isomura were involved in developing the JFS coursebook "Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture"*. She also put together and supervised texts for secondary education while stationed in Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Her hobbies are skiing and gardening.

Isomura Kazuhiro
Lecturer, The Japan Foundation*, Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa

Isomura has been in charge of teacher training and developing Japanese learning materials. He is a co-author of "Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture"* and was the supervisor of NHK's 2006 Japanese language education program "Erin's Challenge! I Can Speak Japanese." He has taught Japanese in Australia and Germany. He plays percussion in an amateur orchestra on his days off.

Eriko Kojima

Eriko was born in Tokyo, but spent her childhood years in the US. She is a bilingual narrator, newsreader, and interpreter with over 20 years of experience. She is a regular host of many English programs on NHK WORLD-JAPAN.

Michael Rhys

Michael is from the UK and has been a professional voice actor for over 20 years. He can be heard regularly on NHK radio and television as a narrator, newsreader and presenter.
