Street Cents is a magazine format series that provides teens valuable consumer education. It gives teens the information they need to survive in the marketplace, in school, on the job and after hours.
There is increasing evidence that young Canadians, especially women aged 13-19, are becoming the new risk group for contracting HIV/AIDS. Teens tell us why they think sex-ed is failing at school and hosts run a course on condom etiquette.
The show tests hydration packs and investigates complaints from Philippines students who are not getting the number of minutes they pay for on their long distance calling cards. |

Jury Comments |

The
show contains clear, practical advice and encourages viewers to be critical
consumers. It is unusual in the depth and relevance of its suggested solutions
and brave in its honest coverage of taboo subjects. It is made with humor
and style which the jury thought would be highly attractive to its target
audience. The program features inspiring and engaging hosts and each segment
uses production techniques that are totally appropriate for the audience,
while supporting rather than overwhelming the subject matter. It moves effortlessly
between widely disparate content in a way that is both surprising and clear.
It could be very effectively used either as a whole program or in segments
for classroom learning. |

It
was an honour to travel to Tokyo to accept the Minister of Foreign Affairs

The people who make Street
Cents have a strong commitment to educating, while entertaining the teenage
viewers. Hopefully we achieve this with understanding and compassion. Being
relevant to young people is of prime importance to the Street Cents production
team. Worldwide recognition confirms the value and integrity we hope the
programme embodies, and it encourages us to continue to explore this most
difficult, joyful, fascinating time of life.
As executive-producer of
Street Cents, attending the ceremony at NHK was a thrilling experience. I
have not been more proud of the programme and the team of researchers and
producers who make Street Cents. Thank you very much Japan Prize. |
