As independent film becomes more enfranchised within the Hollywood system there has been a tendency for a kind of commercial genre of independent film to evolve, and we have begun to see the production of almost formulaic works, i.e. quirky comedies, weak imitations of Tarantino style gangsters, the archetypal 20 something romance, etc. and it's clear that you are looking at filmmaking that is as market driven, at the concept, as anything that the studios try to do.
And so it's completely refreshing to view the artistic output of many of the new international filmmakers, including a number of those from Asia, and to feel revitalized as one experiences filmmaking that returns to the roots of independent production. Films that are personal, writer driven, original and
inspired. Work that takes the creative freedom of independent filmmaking
seriously and views the barriers of limited resources, time and money as
incentives for invention. The passions of creativity and art are truly
embodied in storytelling that doesn't waver from the path of real cinematic vision, refraining equally from either self indulgence and/or abject catering to commercial demands.
So take risks and let me encourage you to continue to display the qualities that will mark your achievements as films that will be remembered, that will touch and resonate even when out of step with popular embrace.
