Born in 1954, Hajisarri swept the 1993's awards in Malaysia for his first full-length feature film, WOMAN, WIFE AND WHORE. In the following year he received international acclaim for THE ARSONIST and became the first Malaysian director ever to be invited to the Cannes International Film Festival; the film was also named Best International Film at the Brussels Film Festival. He has consistently chosen to depict characters that are searching for their identity while struggling in Malaysia's multi-ethnic society.
It takes place in the 1950's, while Malaysia is in the midst of an independence movement, Mamat is a freedom fighter as well as a trainer in the traditional Malaysian art of bullfighting. Once the country has achieved independence, however, the new government outlaws bullfighting under Islamic Fundamental Law. Mamat, out of work, migrates to Thailand. He manages to gain fame but life in a foreign land is still not easy. One day, Mamat's bull and his best friend are both shot dead by bitter opponents defeated in bull fighting. Mamat rises to seek revenge, but...
