[COMMENTARY]
Born in 1962, Vithanage swept all the domestic film awards in 1992 for his first feature film, SISILA GINI GANI. His subsequent work, DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL won Special Jury Mention at the Pusan International Film Festival and has been shown at many other international film festivals.
There is a battle going on between Tamils, who are seeking to establish an independent nation in northeastern Sri Lanka, and the government troops. An old blind man named Wannihami lives in a village on the outskirts of the old city of Anuradhapura with his youngest daughter Sunanda, while his son is away fighting as a government soldier.
Sunanda has a boyfriend called Some, a bricklayer, who wonders whether he should leave the village where there are no decent jobs, and become a solider.
One day the coffin of Wannihami's son arrives at his home. The government will pay 10,000 rupees as compensation for his son's death. Some tries to persuade Sunanda to convince her father to accept it. But old Wannihami is not even willing to believe that his son is dead... |
