[COMMENTARY]
Since his directorial debut in 1966, very popular Songsri has produced a large body of work that traces the roots of the Thai mind. This is a love romance enriched with historical brilliance.
Young man Pranai meets an extraordinary young woman in the Ayutthaya forest. She is robed in ancient Thai garment, speaks an ancient Thai dialect, and is stunningly beautiful. He discovers that her name is Nokyoong, and that she is the daughter of a general from Ayutthaya period more than 200 years earlier.
In 1767, Ayutthaya, the capital of the time, had come under vicious attack by the Myanmar army. The general, wishing to protect his beloved family from the ravages of war, invoked the magic of the Peacock God and managed to transport his entire family away from his residence through a slip in time.
The course of love between the daughter of the general from Ayutthaya and the modern youth is portrayed with dreamy touch while deftly raising the issue of modern Thailand where virtue is slowly slipping away over time. |
