[COMMENTARY]
Born in 1941, Gopalakrishnan, a key figure in Malayalam films in Kerala in southern India, speaks of this film, "I tried to express the eternal impulse of man to resist oppression and other things that are contrary to individual free will such as being slotted into systems."
Kunjunni, born into a traditional landowning family, grows up without ever knowing his father. His mother is often ill. However, due to the love and care lavished on the boy by his doting grandmother, by his devoted estate manager, and by his charming playmate Meenakshi, the daughter of a maid, he grows up to be a warm-hearted, gentle boy. Under Gandhi, India wins its independence from Britain, followed by a political confusion. By the time Kunjunni goes off to university, he has matured into a political idealist like many young people of the time. In his own state of Kerala, the world's first democratically elected communist government assumes office and begins to reform the system of land ownership.
