Overview of Operations
NHK aims to provide audiences with broadcasts and services of the highest standard. Broadcasts and services are being improved and enhanced so that NHK can meet the expectations of its audiences and provide them with more value for their receiving fees. It is pursuing challenges and reforms in order to evolve from public broadcasting into public service media suited to the era convergence of broadcasting and communication.
Domestic Broadcasts
A diverse range of programs - covering news, education, culture, family entertainment and sports - are broadcast around the clock on every day of the year.
NHK operates six television channels: General TV, Educational TV, BS 1, BS Premium, BS4K and BS8K. NHK also delivers three radio channels: Radio 1, Radio 2 and FM.

International Services
NHK offers services to overseas countries, namely NHK WORLD-JAPAN, on television, radio and via the Internet. NHK strives to promote a deeper international understanding of Japan, introducing the latest events in Japan through news and other programs.

- TV
- News and various programs are delivered in English 24 hours a day. Programs are available via satellite broadcasting, cable TV, and Internet.
- RADIO
- Our radio service is delivered in 17 foreign languages. Listeners can access the content through a variety of methods such as Shortwave, Medium Wave, FM, satellite radio, and Internet.
- INTERNET
- NHK WORLD-JAPAN ONLINE provides TV and radio programming simultaneously with their broadcasts, as well as on-demand.
Japanese-language services
- NHK WORLD PREMIUM
- News and informational programs, as well as drama, music, children's, and sports programs.
- NHK WORLD RADIO JAPAN
- Radio service for Japanese speakers overseas.

Research Activities
NHK is committed to carrying out research that is required to advance broadcasting and the reception of programming.
NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (STRL) is the sole research facility in Japan that specializes in broadcasting technology. It has the task of leading Japan in developing new broadcasting technologies and contributing to a rich broadcasting culture.
One example of a system undergoing intensive research is 8K(Super Hi-Vision). It offers 16 times the number of pixels of current Hi-Vision (HD) and a 22.2 multichannel sound system. It gives viewers the sensation they are actually present at the place the image is being captured.
