Explore the Wonders of Chitose River（The Home of Salmon: Chitose Aquarium）
An aquarium with the largest fresh water fish tank in Japan that holds 300 tons of water, you can see salmon, masu salmon, as well as rare fish known as the Japanese huchen and the Green sturgeon with a body length of almost 2 meters, along with other fresh water species from all over the world. Fish such as the white-spotted char and the three-spined stickleback are displayed in a water tank that recreates the beautiful under water environment of Lake Shikotsu. The “Under Water Observation Zone” is the first exhibit in Japan that allows visitors to take a direct look into the Chitose River and observe the seasonal creatures in their natural environment. In the autumn, visitors can see schools of salmon swimming upstream to lay their eggs.
