NHK STRL New Building Construction Completion Ceremony

The construction of the new STRL buildings has just been completed, and a ceremony marking the event took place on November 8. Construction started on the new buildings, which are adjacent to the current STRL building, in April 1999. The new research facility has the following features:

Structural overview
- Total floor area: Approx. 46,000 m2
- High-rise building: two stories underground, 14 stories above ground
- Medium-rise buildings: two stories underground, six stories above ground
- Eaves height: 65 m
- STRL floor space: Approx. 16,000 m2
Architectural concept
- Friendly NHK STRL
- Public area, providing visitors with information on the laboratories and the local region
- Environmentally friendly building
- HVAC system with natural ventilation
- A 'green' lot, which contributes to improvement of the community environment
- Advanced research facilities
- Optical fiber information infrastructure networks
- Laboratories for research in a variety of high-tech fields

As the sole research institution for broadcasting technology in Japan since its establishment in 1930, NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories has greatly contributed to the mission of the public broadcaster.
The new facility ensures that STRL will continue to be a pioneer of new broadcasting services in the 21st century. R&D activities will be in the following fields:
- advanced ISDB
- contents production technologies
- future broadcasting services and their fundamental technologies

The new buildings will also house the NHK Communications Training Institute for training personnel in the broadcasting field. They are scheduled to be officially opened in April 2002.
