New Closed Captioning and Character Superimposition

Closed-captioning system with diverse range of expression

Outline

We are studying a new closed-captioning system for 8K broadcasting. This exhibit shows the new closed-captioning and character superimposition technology using an extended encoding scheme based on TTML*1.

Features

・Diverse forms of expression using images, audio and animation as well as characters are made possible by extending the W3C*2 recommendation for TTML 1.0.

・In addition to fixed presentation by a built-in function of the receiver, received closed captions can be easily decorated and displayed via Hybridcast applications.

・The closed captions described by TTML can be also used for closed-captioning services for Internet videos.

*1 TTML (Timed Text Markup Language): A markup language that can specify the timing and layout of text display.

*2 W3C (World Wide Web Consortium): An international organization promoting the standardization of technologies used on the web.
