Space-Sharing Content Viewing System

Experiencing AR and VR content with someone at a distant location

Sharing the experience and excitement of realistic and immersive content with others

We are pursuing research on experiences that will exceed the framework of conventional television and will encourage deeper connections with others through the content. In this exhibit, we present a system that uses augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to enable people in distant locations to experience content together in ways that feel as though they are in the same space.

Experiencing content together in the same space

The system was proposed as a “Living room of the future,” and creates an environment in which the person at the distant location is displayed in life-sized 3D images beside the viewer and the viewers can talk and work together. For this exhibit, we have created content that enables viewers to experience vicariously, what the presenters experienced in the program, “Fresh Encounters with our Cultural Heritage” broadcasted in NHK's 8K Satellite Channel. Viewers can collaborate with their friends or family at distant locations to learn more about the “Goggle-eyed dogu (clay figurine) ,” by shining a flashlight on what they want to look at or exploring inside the figurine together.

Simulated experience of the Space-Sharing Content Viewing System

We produced 360 images to simulate the experience of part of the Space-Sharing Content Viewing system. We created AR/VR content for the program, “Fresh Encounters with our Cultural Heritage: Goggle-eyed dogu,” to provide a deeper understanding of the program content. The 360 images provides a vicarious experience of viewing the program content together with someone at a distant location.

Try it with your smartphone or tablet! AR “goggle-eyed” clay figurine

This exhibit enables viewers to use their own smartphone or tablet to experience AR content* of an important cultural property called a “goggle-eyed” clay figurine. With AR content, you can observe from any angle you like and experience it at full scale by displaying it in the real space in front of you.

* Using 3D models with reduced resolution based on the data from NHK's 8K program "Fresh Encounters with our Cultural Heritage".

* AR mode is not available on some smartphone or tablet.

“Fresh Encounters with our Cultural Heritage,” BS8K Program

In the program, “Fresh Encounters with our Cultural Heritage” that was broadcasted in NHK's 8K Satellite Channel, the presenters use an 8K display and VR technology to experience the cultural property “Goggle-eyed clay figurine” captured in ultra-high definition, and make various discoveries. This exhibit uses the Space-Sharing Content Viewing System to enable a viewer to experience the same goggle-eyed figurine that appeared in the program, together with someone at a distant location.
