About
Greeting
NHK STRL Open House is an open house event held by the NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories (NHK STRL) to showcase our latest research results for all of our viewers. It is held every year in May at our location in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. It was first held in 1947, and has been very popular, giving our visitors a close look at broadcast technology research that they would not ordinarily be exposed to.
However, this year it has been necessary to limit our “NHK STRL Open House 2021” to an online event. We are very sorry that we cannot see you all face-to-face and show you our research, but we have created video and experiential content that we hope you will enjoy on this event web site.
The theme for our open house this year is “Pursuing science and technology. Enriching your experience.” We are pursuing research on broadcast technology every day, to bring new experiences and excitement to all of our viewers. Our researchers have worked hard to find ways to convey details of their latest research in terms that are easy to understand, creating web pages for each exhibit. Please explore this site to experience the latest results in broadcast technology research.
Future Vision 2030-2040
STRL has also envisioned what media environments will be like in the years between 2030 and 2040, and as the research arm of NHK, a public service media organization, has set directions and targets that are summarized under the title, “Future Vision 2030-2040.”
To achieve this Future Vision, we are pursuing three key R&D focal points that we are calling, “Immersive Media,” to offer new adventures and emotional journeys beyond anything television has ever provided; “Universal Services,” delivered anytime, anywhere, to anyone; and “Frontier Science,” featuring cutting-edge scientific research for both future media creation and sustainable societies.
The top page of this site has buttons for each of these R&D focal points, which will display pages for each R&D focal point.
