Over the last few days, we saw more than 9 hours of films depicting different aspects of cultures and concerns shared by humankind over the globe. It wasn’t easy to select the best, but the discussions I had with my wonderful colleagues narrowed the differences and help us reach decisions. This experience taught me how much dialogue is needed in the difficult times we are going through.

Employable Me as the Best Work for its ability to speak to the mind and heart as well, and to teach us about the challenges facing people with disabilities and help us understand what we can do to make a difference in our communities. It’s an emotional roller-coaster ride that both warms and breaks your heart.

Northern Pictures, Screen Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation are honoured our documentary series Employable Me was awarded the JAPAN PRIZE 2018. We appreciate the JAPAN PRIZE recognising the significance and enormous value in communicating important social issues through documentaries such as this and the huge impact they can have to challenge misconceptions and inform. The aim of our series was to shine a light on a truly global issue—that all people, regardless of disability or difference—can contribute to their societies, if only given the chance to do so.

The greatest thanks must go to our participants and their families who so generously and courageously allowed us to make their private and long-standing struggles around disability and employment public to the rest of the world—to promote awareness, to educate and help others.
