Baby on the Way is a heartwarming Mongolian production that tells the story of the six year-old Ganaa, who waits for his sister to be born. The documentary follows the daily life of this little boy and his family of herders and enables us to experience a very intimate moment that is common amongst every culture. While getting an insight into nomadic life in Mongolia, we also learn that in every country and every family the happiness when a baby is born is the same. We differ but in fact we are alike.

It was such an honour to get the Japan Foundation President’s Prize for the children’s documentary collaboration Baby on the Way, which I accepted on behalf of my co-production colleagues from Mongolia, Bhutan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore and Korea. Superman, Gaanaa is one of six films revealing the emotional upheaval attending the arrival of a brand new sibling. Though a universal story, it plays out in uniquely different ways in every community and family, and one of our aims was to celebrate diverse cultures and lifestyles, open up young minds and encourage mutual understanding and respect. Another aim was to help enhance the quality of Asian children’s content, in which real children are seldom shown, and to champion the idea of international collaboration in this field. The recognition of our work by the Japan Foundation will help us achieve both these aims, in further seasons of Baby on the Way and successor projects.
