Sunny Bergman tackles one of the most difficult issues today with verve and courage as she embarks on an investigation into Dutch nostalgia and racism. What unfolds is a remarkably candid examination of her own views and those of her friends, family and colleagues. Combining these views with bold social experiments, and scientific research, she gently forces the viewer to consider their own prejudices and behaviours. All this is set against the drama of a court case against Black Peter (an icon from Dutch Christmas past) where she illuminates the very real racism faced by minority groups in the Netherlands today. It is the excellent use of a local story to bring a universal theme to life, as well as the open and candid personality of the filmmaker that makes this a highly entertaining and thought provoking film, leaving the viewer questioning their own behaviour.

That our film Our Colonial Hangover wins such a big prize in Japan is an huge honor for our production company De Familie Film & TV, based in Amsterdam. But more important; it is prove that the debate around the figure Black Peter is something that also concerns people on the other side of the world.
In the film director Sunny Bergman analyses the debate in the Netherlands around the racist component in the attitude towards this figure. During the making of the film Bergman and her team were passionately trying to make the Dutch people aware of what they called ‘underground racism’; the unconscious prejudices that people have against skin color.
We are very grateful for the appreciation for this film and want to thank JAPAN PRIZE for both prizes. We think Our Colonial Hangover is a film that matters
