Meerkat's Adventure
Entering Organization Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC)
Country/Region Namibia

In its devotion to promoting basic literacy, numeracy, and other early learning skills in a fun and engaging way, Meerkat’s Adventure will positively exploit the capacity of both television and radio to reach and teach on a large scale. The program will build on the appeal of an animated character, based on a familiar, indigenous animal, who is destined to delight the audience it reaches.
While the substantial value of investment in high-quality early childhood education has been well established, far too few children in Namibia have access to its benefit. The program offers an exceptional educational platform for reaching underserved children. Reflecting the positive aspects of the context in which children live, Meerkat’s Adventure will provide a salient, culturally-relevant learning experience that will undoubtedly result in making a measurable impact on the lives of the many Namibian children who need it most.

This programme for pre-school children was born from a need to assist the education system in Namibia with a programme that would teach children age 3-6 years with a basic understanding of rudimentary literacy skills in English. With 13 different languages spoken in the country we wanted to find an animated animal who could help the children understand and comprehend the different skills like letters, numbers, shapes and colours needed to start Grade 1. With an animated Meerkat we want to provide a fun and entertaining programme that the kids would love to learn from. Children need to learn but also need to express themselves in a language that they are comfortable with.
