The Jury is delighted to award a wonderful story that we feel will serve to promote empathy among young people around the world. Although the main character of this film encounters many challenges in his daily life he manages them with humor and courage. This well-constructed story provides insight into the strong support of an extraordinary father and the friendship of a young man’s classmates. Thanks to a sensible and never voyeuristic usage of family archives and photographs, we are able to witness crucial moments in the protagonist’s development throughout childhood, and we get a good understanding of the sufferance caused by his disability, as well as the motivations and skills that helped him to maintain a positive outlook. The way to embrace imperfection showcases an important topic for Taiwan that can also inspire audiences on a global scale. Lin Yen-liang’s positivity positions him as a role model for all of us trying to embrace our imperfections.

There are a lot of challenges in the process of growing up, so family and friends are crucial in building our confidence and giving us support. However, for children with a congenital disease, how much effort do they have to make and how much support do they need from family and friends so that they can overcome their difficulties and embrace their imperfection?
First time we record Lin Yen-liang stories in 2005. We were deeply touched by his humor and his father’s love. After the shooting, director and Yen-liang’s families become good friends. In 2013, we recorded about Yen-liang high school career. We were surprised by his classmates help. All these have made his life full of laughter and courage when growing up. We faithfully presented protagonist’s humorous personality and attitude to life. We are very happy that Yen-liang’s story was awarded The Best Work in the Youth Category of the JAPAN PRIZE.
