The illustrated book No Fish Where to Go, written by Marie-Francine Hébert and illustrated by Janice Nadeau, has been my companion for nearly seven years. I wanted to make it into an animated film. When we started planning the project in the fall of 2010, we were faced with two challenges. Could the two original authors of the book and an animated film director (Nicola Lemay) work well together as a team? Moreover, could we make a film adaptation that would do justice to this wonderful book? From the beginning, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of retaining only the “essence” of the story. I want to make it so that the picture, the moments of silence, the sounds, the empty spaces, the colours, etc. are worth a thousand words that anyone, children and adults alike from around the world, can easily understand. Most importantly, the audience should be moved. And, when confronted with the worst of human nature, they should keep believing in the best.
