The impending threat of cyber war is a reality in today’s digital age. For those who are familiar with cyber security and the web, this threat may be well-known. For many of us, however, this threat is less understood and not always accessible. The multi-media, cross-platform project allows all viewers to grasp the gravity and importance of understanding this threat. This project, netwars, employs documentary storytelling, a web-browser experience and an app, maximizing each platform’s technological capacities to provide a rich, immersive learning experience for viewers of all ages, all the while encouraging them to share their views through social media. We chose this project as the winner of the Creative Frontier Category as a result of its cohesive approach to a complex topic and it’s effective use of multiple platforms to reach a diverse range of audiences. The topics explored are highly relevant, and the project imparts crucial information for a general audience.

Every day we get alarming news about data spying and surveillance, cyber crime, digital attacks on infrastructure and manipulation of minds on the internet.
But yet the reaction is not very strong and people still think –well that sort of stuff doesn’t affect the ordinary person’s daily life. But that’s not true because modern society is built on digital infrastructures.
We have digital DNA, everything is connected, critical infrastructures are everywhere and we are all, every single one of us, highly vulnerable. We show that everyone who uses modern IT-based tools is caught in this net of interconnectedness. We are all part of it. It was our approach to make netwars / out of CTRL interactive and to show users: “Hey, you are right in the middle of what’s happening! Feel it and see it–we are creeping onto your own computer. This is real!!”
That was our drive in making netwars / out of CTRL interactive and also rather emotional. To wake people up and say–“Hey! This is a serious problem! And you can not ignore it any longer!”
We are very happy that the JAPAN PRIZE jurors awarded our personal and emotional approach which drives attention to the very relevant and critical but in the same time abstract topic of cyberwar and our highly vulnarable modern society.
