Looking good and cool is a very important aspect in the life of 11-year-old girls. Clothes, accessories, make-up, hair style are strong elements of self confidence and the mirror is always there for the final check. But Kelly, a girl with long beautiful dark hair, who lives in Israel, makes an important decision. She decides to cut her hair to donate it to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients. Hair Story tells us an emotional true story where Kelly shares with the audience her struggles and doubts about donating her hair. The camera captures powerful moments, from Kelly cutting her hair at the hairdresser’s shop, then facing herself in the mirror, to her meeting with Liza, the little cancer patient, who got the wig made with Kelly’s hair. The jury recognized the strong teaching value of this doc as raising awareness in the world about donation, giving and volunteering among the young generation.

I was very much impressed by the importance and respect given by the JAPAN PRIZE competition and its organizers to the development and promotion of television programs with educational values. Here in Israel we encourage children and teenagers to volunteer, to contribute to society and to help other people. Broadcasting of programs that deal with these educational values raises awareness and has a positive infl uence on society. The yearly hair donation campaign for children with cancer is being held this month. The number of donations has risen signifi cantly from the previous year, when we filmed Hair Story. I hope our film contributed in part to raising awareness of this important act of giving and donating. In my opinion, the JAPAN PRIZE is a very important competition and I hope you will continue holding it for many years and that many more countries will participate, building a hope for a better future for all of us.
