The aim of the site is to reinforce the program message about the need for international cooperation to protect Antarctica and the global environment. In a game format, children must stop environmental disaster in order to rescue penguins. A picture chat allows children to communicate across language barriers. For schools, there are video clips to demonstrate different approaches to environmental problems.

Jury Comments
Global issues need a global strategy for communicating and encouraging collaboration to address them. The ANTARCTICA website offers a valuable means to study and work together to improve our environment and the future of our planet. Students collaborate as they advance their understanding of such problems as pollution, the ozone hole, and the dramatic consequences of global warming.
Looking at the Antarctic environment through the eyes of a penguin, students get a profound insight into the causes of the problems and to develop a vision on how to solve them. A wide range of tools such as Picture Chat, which uses symbols to connect students with language differences, a video message board and live data from the Antarctic station provide comprehensive and highly-innovative elements.
Both the television program and website were carefully planned and produced to optimize learning and to inspire students to take action.

Producer's comments
Mr.Kenji Kikue, Senior Producer, Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK)
The year 2003 marks the 50th year of NHK Telecasting. To commemorate this event NHK has established a broadcasting station in Antarctica for one year, dispatching a staff of 5 people including a reporter, program director and cameraman.
Using valuable video gathered in Antarctica the team has produced 15-min educational programs, for 10-15 year olds, about environmental pollution. Also, questions sent to the NHK crew via the website were answered by them in live feature programs from Antarctica.
Antarctica is in danger. Global warming is melting icebergs and expanding the ozone hole, and PCB is poisoning the bodies of penguins. Environmental pollution is spreading in Antarctica, the Earth’s last paradise.
Through this website, we hope to facilitate children’s communication about the Antarctic environment. This is because Antarctica doesn’t belong to any country, and the future of this continent depends on the collaboration of children in the world.
