When Bryan sees his daughter Alice practicing Japanese calligraphy with a brush and ink, he is struck by how outdated it all seems... When do you need to use a pen nowadays, let alone a brush?! Whilst claiming computers to be more convenient, he is encouraged by Itsuki to try a calligraphy class held by a well-known ? yet eccentric ? teacher.

In a world of typing and tapping and touchscreens, why do we need calligraphy!? When do I even use a pen? When preparing to write the series, I went for a trial session at a calligraphy class... and was enthralled. There was so much dedication and patience from my fellow pupils. Not only did it make me think of giving calligraphy a go, but also that maybe I should put a bit more effort into my own (English) hand-writing!
