An introduction to NHK's 8K UHDTV(Super Hi-Vision)research and development process.

1995
  • Research on ultra-high definition video system Super Hi-Vision begins.
2000
  • Research begins on ultra high-definition video system with 4000 scanning lines and 3D audio system.
2002
  • Mar. Ultra high-definition video system with 4000 scanning lines and 3D sound reproduction system displayed at the inaugural ceremony at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories.
2003
  • May Movie on the ultra high-definition video system with 4000 scanning lines shown at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories open house.
2004
  • Ultra high-definition video system with 4000 scanning lines and 22.2 multichannel sound system named Super Hi-Vision.
2005
  • Mar. 8K Super Hi-Vision images screened at the EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan.
  • Oct. The Kyushu National Museum introduced a system displaying stills of art pieces in Super Hi-Vision.
  • Nov. Live feed experiment to transmit uncompressed Super Hi-Vision signals via optical fiber succeeds.
2006
  • Apr. Displayed at the NAB2006 in Las Vegas.
  • Sept. Displayed at the IBC2006
  • Dec. NHK's program "Kouhaku Utagassen" (The Red and White Year-end Song Festival) was successfully transmitted with bit-rate compression over IP networks from Tokyo to Osaka, in cooperation with NTT and NTT Communications.
2007
  • Oct. Video format standardized by SMPTE.
2008
  • Jul. Audio system format (22.2 multichannel sound system) standardized by SMPTE.
  • Sept. At the IBC2008 in Amsterdam, NHK succeeded in an international transmission experiment, in cooperation with BBC, RAI, among others.
2009
  • Apr. Displayed at NAB2009 in Las Vegas.
  • May A live multi-channel satellite transmission experiment is performed at the Open House of the NHK science & Technology Research Laboratories.
2010
  • May Full resolution color camera was displayed at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories open house.
  • Aug. Interface standardized by SMPTE.
  • Sept. Displayed at the IBC2010 in Amsterdam. NHK succeeded in an international live feed transmission experiment from London to Tokyo using IP networks, in cooperation with BBC, NTT, among others.
2011
  • Jan. Practical compact projector developed.
  • May 85-inch liquid crystal display and display with built-in 22.2 multichannel sound reproduction system were exhibited at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories open house.
  • Sept. Exhibited at the IBC2011 in Amsterdam.
  • Sept. Exhibited at ITU-R in Geneva.
2012
  • Recomended as the international standard for ultra high definition television system by ITU-R.
  • Feb. Image sensor with the frame rate of 120Hz is developed.
  • Apr. 145-inch plasma display is developed.
  • May Compact camera (same size as HDTV camera) is developed.
  • May Transmission experiment via terrestrial waves succeded.
  • May Production system for 22.2 multichannel audio exhibited at NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories open house.
  • Jul. Public viewing at London Olympic Games.
    In a world first, live 8K trial public viewings of the London Olympic Games were held in the UK and Japan.
  • Aug. Recommended as the international standard for television by lTU-R.
2013
  • Feb. Transmission experiment via cable TV facilities succeeds.
  • May HEVC encoding device is developed.
  • May Cube type conpact camera head is developed.
2014
  • Jan. Long-distance transmission experiment via terrestrial waves succeeds.
  • Feb. Public viewing at Sochi Olympic Games.
  • May 8K Super Hi-Vision transmission test using the nation's largest cable TV facility succeeded.
  • Jun. Public viewing at 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™
    8K footage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ was transmitted to Japan, where trial public viewings were held in four locations.
  • Sept. Video shot using a 8K Super Hi-Vision camera with a frame frequency of 120Hz was shown for the first time in the world at IBC2014 in Amsterdam.
2015
  • Jun. Public viewing at FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™
  • Jul. 8K recordings of NY Yankees vs Seatttle Mariners and a public viewing at the venue.
2016
  • Feb. NFL Super Bowl 50 recorded in 8K and shown at a trial live public viewing in Japan.
  • Aug. Start of test satellite broadcasting of 4K and 8K"NHK Super Hi-Vision."
  • Aug. Public viewing at Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
2018
  • Dec. Start of 4K and 8K satellite broadcasts.
2019
  • Sep. Public viewing at Rugby World Cup 2019™
