Completion of the New Research Complex

Ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the entrance hall of new building.
The completion ceremony for the new Science & Technical Research Laboratories was held on March 6, 2002. Over 330 people were present, including members of Parliament, the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, and Posts and Telecommunications (MPHPT), as well as local residents and representatives from broadcasting-related and construction-related industries. NHK's President, Katsuji Ebisawa, gave the first address in the new auditorium. This was followed by congratulatory addresses by Mr. Gen'ichiro Sata, Senior Vice Minister of the MPHPT; Mr. Hideaki Tamura, Chairman of the Upper House Committee on General Affairs; Mr. Kouzo Hirabayashi, Chairman of the Lower House Committee on General Affairs; and Mr. Keiji Oba, the Head of Setagaya Ward. Dr. Osamu Yamada, Director-General of NHK STRL, then presented a report on the history of the construction project. The ceremony concluded with a ribbon cutting in the entrance hall.
Following the ceremony, those in attendance were given a tour of the research complex and shown exhibits of the laboratories' research. A total of eight exhibits is displayed in the ultra high-definition image laboratory, the experimental studio, and the ISDB laboratory. These included a 4000 scanning line ultra high-definition image system, a new virtual studio capable of composing a virtual space by combining an actual set with CGs, and easy-to-use information barrier-free broadcasting services. The tour also had stops at other laboratories, such as the sound anechoic chamber. More public exhibitions are scheduled at STRL's Open House in May.
The event's afternoon program was open to the general public; specifically, local residents were invited to watch a performance by a string quartet made up of members of NHK's Symphony Orchestra. They also enjoyed hearing the memorial lecture by Dr. Mamoru Mohri, the astronaut. Guests and local residents expressed their hopes for a bright future for the broadcasting technology researchers at the new complex.

Dr. Mamoru Mohri lectured on his experiences on the Space Shuttle by showing stunning HDTV images. NHK S.O. played Haydon's string quartet.
