Opening Address Osamu YAMADA, Director-General, Science & Technical Research Laboratories Our laboratories were established in 1930, five years after the commencement of medium-wave broadcasting in Japan. Ever since their foundation, the STRL has taken a leading, pioneering role in the promotion of research and development for the broadcasting technology field. Along with supporting the broadcasting businesses of NHK, we have also contributed greatly to the advancement of broadcasting, not only in Japan, but also on a global scale. Our recent and on-going developments include digital satellite broadcasting, named BS Digital, which started in December of last year, and digital terrestrial broadcasting, which is scheduled to commence in 2003. Accompanying broadcasting digitalization, a flood of diverse digital information, such as multi-channel and multimedia, is now expected. In this time of drastic transitions in the media environment of broadcasting, we will continue taking a leading role as the research institute of a public broadcaster. To accomplish this role, we will constantly reform ourselves, looking 10 to 20 years into the future. We shall continue to pursue studies that will realize the dreams of the future. With regard to the administration of the STRL, we lead the world as an open laboratory. We will promote activities to diffuse the technologies developed at the STRL abroad, explaining their advantages to the global community. This will require close collaboration and cooperation with organizations overseas. We will also endeavor, through training, to assist researchers to acquire high levels of technical skill. In April next year, research activities will begin in the new STRL research buildings. We, the entire STRL staff, have renewed our firm determination to proceed with outstanding research projects using the latest facilities, and to contribute our research results for the progress of 21st century broadcasting technology. |
