The NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories: Framework Raising Ceremony

Planning & Coordination

Close and Wide Ranging External Collaboration and Cooperation
Total reconstruction of the Science & Technical Research Laboratories facility is underway. On December 11 of last year, under a blue winter sky, a religious event unique to Japan was held: the solemn "framework raising ceremony". It was performed to honor the deities and the people involved in the construction for the safe construction up to that point, and to wish and pray for smooth construction in the future. The ceremony was attended by people both from the construction side and NHK, including President EBISAWA of NHK.
From now on, work will be done on the outside walls, the interior, and the exterior in order to complete the new buildings by October of this year. Starting in April of next year, research toward the realization of fresh dreams will start in this new facility, based on the concept of an "open laboratory," with the first floor of the building open to our viewers.
The STRL 70th anniversary commemoration symposium held on July 7 reemphasized the trend in broadcasting of deepening relationships with other fields such as those of communications and computers. As the IT revolution progresses, the importance of external collaboration will increase.
For this reason, STRL is conducting a wide range of joint research projects with universities, research institutes, and manufacturers within and outside of Japan. In order to further this collaboration, our group, as STRL's interface, has the role of grasping trends and initiating contacts with outside organizations. We also actively inform the public of research results in the STRL journals and homepage.
