| We are developing ultrahigh-resolution plasma display panels (PDPs) for SHV home receivers. The PDPs on the market today include large HDTV display models over 100 inches, and such large displays have the potential to be future home displays for the SHV system. Advances are being made on the technologies needed for ultrahigh-resolution and low power consumption. Recent developments include a high-definition PDP with improved luminous efficiency and an electrode protective film*1 that can drive a PDP at a low voltage. |
- We fabricated a prototype 6.5-inch ultrahigh-resolution PDP with the world's smallest pixel pitch (0.3 mm*2). The unit stably displays moving images. Improvements to the discharge cell (the structure within a pixel sub-pixel) give the 6.5-inch ultrahigh-resolution PDP a luminous efficiency 1.5 times higher than that of the previous unit.
- A 16-inch high- resolution PDP with a 0.36 mm pixel pitch was also constructed to examine the feasibility of constructing a larger display.
- We developed a PDP with a 0.66 mm pixel pitch based on an electrode protective film using strontium calcium oxide (SrCaO) in place of the magnesium oxide used in conventional PDPs. It can display moving pictures at the lowest voltage ever obtained. This technology can reduce the driving power, and thereby can reduce power consumption.
|
| We will work to improve luminous efficiency through elucidation of the discharge mechanism and we will incorporate the SrCaO electrode protective film in PDPs with small pixel pitches. |
*1 : A thin film on the surface of the insulators that cover electrodes. It works as a substantive electrode, suppressing electrode degradation.
*2: A pixel pitch small enough for a 100-inch diagonal SHV display.
Research on the 6.5-inch diagonal PDP is being conducted in partnership with Pioneer Corporation, Noritake Co., Limited, and NBC Inc. Research on the 16-inch diagonal PDP is being carried out with Pioneer Corporation.
