| In Japan and the rest of the world, terrestrial and satellite broadcasting is entering the digital age. We invite you to experience this near-future broadcasting world in two exhibits. The first exhibit is a service for mobile receivers on which TV can be viewed anytime and anywhere. The second exhibit is on broadcasting based on home servers, a form of broadcasting which we believe will be more convenient than the present form of broadcasting and be able to be a 鍍reasure box of content for. |
A service for mobile receivers will begin soon, and it will have very little audio and video distortion even when it is received 登n the move. Installed in cellular phones and car navigation systems, it will become a bridge to a new era in which television becomes an 殿nytime, anywhere medium. This will especially prove important during emergencies. For example, during a disaster, cellular phones will automatically turn on to allow them to instantly receive emergency broadcasts notifying the public of the disaster and providing evacuation information. It will also be feasible for users to search for and confirm safety information for an affected area via a communications network as needed. Thus, the receiver will be an essential item during an emergency. |
Broadcasting based on home servers will cause digital broadcasting to evolve. The receiver of this service will have a large-capacity storage function and be linked to a communications network. Services closely tailored to individual viewers’ needs and preferences will be delivered. The large-capacity storage of a receiver will turn the device into a "treasure box of content," in which a diverse materials can be accessed at anytime. Broadcasting metadata, which includes information on usage methods and conditions for the stored content, along with the regular program will enable a wide range of viewing styles, such as "digest viewing" and "interactive viewing." Other services will go beyond the conventional concept of broadcasting. Besides the often cited video-on-demand services, these include the sharing of valuable video materials among schools in a region, interactive services for public organizations such as municipal governments, social welfare organizations, and hospitals. We believe that the home television system of the near future will not only receive digital broadcasting, but will also be connected to broadband networks and a large-capacity video server, thereby becoming an "integrated services television." |
