Research is underway on a TV agent system that will allow anybody to easily operate TV receivers for digital broadcasting. We have constructed various TV agents, including one that retrieves a desired program or suggests a program based on knowledge of the viewer’s personal preferences upon a natural spoken dialogue command. A recent addition to the TV agent system is a Q&A function that gives answers to questions a viewer might have while watching a program. Our goal is a TV agent system capable of more human-like responses, offering a seamless connection between TV viewing and information retrieval. |
- The new Q&A function was installed in the TV agent system with a spoken dialogue TV operation capability, thereby ensuring smooth selection between regular TV operation and the Q&A feature.
- A user uses natural conversational language. S/he does not need to use specific registered keywords in a question.
- The Q&A function covers a wide range of topics for information retrieval, rather than being limited to a specific field.

We will evaluate the prototype system, with the aim of attaining a complete system with an easy-to-use user interface. We will also expand the target question format, from the current Who and What questions (questions like "who is so-and-so?" or "what is such-and-such?") to Why and How questions.
* Agent : a function that allows a computer to autonomously make processing decisions for a viewer. |
