75 Years of STRL
  75th anniversary of STRL
The NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories (STRL) was established in 1930 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Research and development on television has been done here since 1937, starting with preparations for the 1940 Tokyo Olympics that was cancelled because of WW II. This research was forced to cease during the war, but it resumed soon after. The first public presentation of a television broadcasting experiment using cable was at STRL in 1948. When regular television broadcasting began in 1953, two of STRL’s prototype IO cameras were employed, besides the imported camera systems popular at that time. The Tokyo Olympics held in 1964 was referred to as the TV Olympics, thanks to the domestic broadcasting systems and equipment constructed by STRL, including a color camera, contact microphone, and a relay broadcasting system for the marathon. After the Olympics, STRL initiated studies on a high-resolution television system, which eventually became the Hi-Vision (HDTV) system. In fact, STRL has consistently pioneered broadcasting systems, from satellite broadcasting to digital broadcasting and flat displays. Now that these technologies have been commercialized, STRL will continue to seek the challenge of technological development. Our goal is to enrich broadcasting culture based on a new vision of the future.
The 75-year path taken by STRL
The road to broadcasting entailed technological developments in the areas of program production, transmission, recording, and reception. STRL researchers have devoted themselves to the development of new broadcasting systems and their supporting technologies. This exhibition presents the history of STRL, through a chronological chart and archive photographs. The open house also allows you to see some of the devices that STRL has pioneered.
