| Digital broadcasting has a variety of forms, from texual data and diagrams to regular video and audio data. We would like to use this diversity to provide human-friendly broadcasting services that would be accessible for everyone, including the elderly and people with physical impairments.
|
- We have developed an easy-to-operate digital receiver that combines a simple-operation remote control and a menu display.
- We have developed speech rate conversion for radio and TV broadcasts that slows down rapid speech while maintaining high-quality sound. NHK Online and digital radio services by NHK have already launched "slow-pace audio" services.
- An audio service for elderly viewers, in which the sound volume of background music and sound effects is reduced for easier listening, is now available in some digital BS and terrestrial broadcasting programs.
- To make program viewing more enjoyable for people with hearing impairments, NHK offers closed-captioned broadcasts. Our latest speech recognition technology enables closed-captioning in news and other live broadcasts.
- We would also like to make digital broadcasting programming pleasurable for those with visual impairments. Our work in this regard includes an enlarged display, data read-out with synthesized speech, and tactile presentations for data broadcasting and the electronic program guide.

| We will continue our studies on information barrier-free technologies that contribute to making broadcasting accessible to all. |
