Background and Objectives |
| |
Research and developments for flexible organic electroluminescent (EL) display, that is thin, lightweight, freely foldable, and portable, are being continued. STRL has already developed high-efficiency phosphorescent polymer materials*. Recently, improvements on the polymers' structure and the device structure have been done for improving the efficiency, and a prototype flexible organic EL display has been demonstrated. |

Features |
| |
- This display employs a light-emitting material having a new light emission mechanism (phosphorescence), whose quantum efficiency is higher than the 5% limit of conventional light-emission (fluorescent) materials. The device's quantum efficiency can also be enhanced through improvement of the device structure (Figure 1).
- The polymer materials can be manufactured with simple device fabrication methods, such as a printing method or a ink-jet method, which have the potential of low-cost manufacture for large-screen, high-definition displays.
- The plastic film substrate is suitable for the flexible displays because of mechanical flexibility (Figure 2). |
