Background and Objectives
Although NHK receives from viewers a number of requests for the rebroadcast of its TV programs, it is not easy to meet all these requests due to the limited number of available broadcasting time slots. For this reason, NHK is conducting a technical research on a system that will allow users to view the replay of a program via a network system.

Features
We recently developed a prototype system that enables a viewer to anytime watch a desired program on their TV via a network. In the prototype system, a digital BS tuner is utilized as a network terminal by applying a newly developed network adaptor. This prototype system has the following features.
- It employs a high-speed access network (100 Mbps) for program distribution.
- It allows a user to view all NHK programs that were broadcasted during the past week.
- User can make a request by using a remote-control-unit attached with the digital satellite STB.
- Programs can be viewed with broadcast-quality video and audio. Closed-captioning, sub-audio commentary, and data broadcasting are also available.

Future Work
To realize such services, we should address the following issues.
- Network transmission control technology.
- Low-cost home terminal.
- High-speed server.
- Rights management protection technology.
Providing programs via network will also require appropriate copy rights processing for individual programs.
