Through digital terrestrial broadcasting, a variety of broadcasting services that were not possible before will become a reality. These new services are supported by a wide range of broadcasting technologies. |

Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting's Attraction |
| |
- High-quality picture/sound broadcasting services featuring Hi-Vision (HDTV)
Hi-Vision (HDTV) programming, which became popular through digital BS broadcasting, will also be available in terrestrial broadcasting. It will provide programs with high-quality audio, such as broadcasts in 5.1 channel surround sound.
- Multi-view broadcasting for multi-channel standard TV broadcasting
Another characteristic of digital broadcasting is its ability to transmit multiple standard picture-quality programs using a bandwidth that is equivalent to one analog-broadcasting channel. Examinations are underway with regard to specific broadcasting service methods, such as the simultaneous transmission of three programs, or the broadcast of three separate scenes for a sports program relay.
- Data broadcasting for nationwide and localized services
Data broadcasting offering information anytime a user desires it will become a standard function of digital terrestrial broadcasting. As a service unique to digital terrestrial broadcasting, it will provide a variety of data closely related to peoples' daily lives, in addition to local news and weather.
- Motion picture services for mobile reception
Broadcasting services for mobile terminals, such as ones for cars and other mobile receivers, will become commonplace aspect of digital terrestrial broadcasting in Japan. In such a broadcasting environment, TV broadcasts can be received at anytime and anywhere.

Technologies Supporting Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting |
| |
- Digitization of broadcasting stations
All the systems in the broadcasting stations and circuits around the country will be digitized. The new technology is expected to do this efficiently and at a minimum cost. An antenna for digital broadcasting was recently installed on Tokyo Tower, and a broadcasting tower is under construction in Seto city, in collaboration with commercial broadcasters. The digitization of a broadcasting tower for the Kinki region is also underway in Ikoma-yama.
- Network technology
To deliver broadcasting throughout the country, the broadcasting networks that link the country will also be digitized. With digital circuits connecting broadcasting stations, broadcasts can be transmitted very efficiently. A technology is being developed to prevent the interference caused by radio waves emitted from other relay stations (a total of 3,500 are installed in Japan). We are also working on a technology to deliver broadcasting via cable to areas with poor reception conditions.
- Digital technology that will realize new services
Our aim is to realize new, unconventional broadcasting services, which will include high-quality picture/sound, such as Hi-Vision (HDTV); multimedia technology, including data broadcasting; human-friendly broadcasting, such as subtitled broadcasting and speech rate conversion; and reception with mobile terminals. To make such services a reality, we are moving forward with a wide range of technological developments.
