We think that the MPF-based Metadata Editor would be very useful for TRECVID activity. We also received the same kind of messages from related sources, so we decided to provide some tips here.  What is TRECVID ? TRECVID is a kind of workshop for competitive information retrieval using video corpora. It is organized by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and DTO (Disruptive Technology Office). Once a year, participants such as research groups in universities and companies are invited to the competition. The participants try to do the tasks specified by TRECVID and submit their results, which are evaluated and compared by the TRECVID organizer. The principal tasks are shot boundary detection, high-level feature detection, and searching that targets TV news programs. Participants have taken various approaches such as video, audio, and text analyses.  Metadata Editor as a support tool Metadata Editor, which is a freeware program, is an example of a reference implementation of MPF (Metadata Production Framework) proposed by NHK. It allows us to combine various analyses such as video, audio, and text processing in the editor in order to generate content-based metadata automatically. The analysis part is left to each researcher so it may be a good platform for TRECVID activities.  How Metadata Editor can be used ? As a tool for visualizing metadata Metadata is displayed along the time line on Metadata Editor so you can easily grasp the distribution of the data. You can also check the video portion corresponding to each item of metadata with just one click. Since the metadata format handled by Metadata Editor is specified in MPF, you can import any format into Metadata Editor by developing an import module, which is a kind of conversion processing. As a tool for search and retrieval, comparison, and evaluation You can align several pieces of metadata, which may be reference data, other researchers'results, and your own results, so you can easily compare the data along the time line. If you develop a module for search and retrieval, of course you can do it. You can also develop an evaluation module that can output numerical results such as recall and precision ratio. As a flexible and extensible experimental tool If you modularize various types of processing, you can combine the modules and vary the parameters as you like. You can also exchange modules and the basis of the results. Thus, Metadata Editor provides you with an experimental environment that has high flexibility and extensibility.  Test Modules for TRECVID Participants Download
