The Goal of Enriching Broadcasting:
“TV Anytime, Anywhere,” “Human-friendly TV”

Looking back at the history of TV technology in Japan, we can see that its development was the result of the countless efforts of many research engineers, both famous and unknown. These engineers extended the vision of “radio farsightedness” that was sown by Kenjiro Takayanagi, a research engineer whose passion and sense of mission they shared. This passion for realizing dreams will continue to create new types of television.

2002- Dreams Create Technology, Dreams Become Reality

Evolution of Television
Broadcasting has come to be an indispensable medium in peoples’ lives for delivering reliable news and rich programming.
The 20th century was often called the “video century.” This was probably because the various video information media technologies, which had been born in the 19th century, spread throughout the world, and even into space, during the 20th century.
On a day-to-day basis, the world is already deeply interdependent, with individuals concerning themselves, not just with local events, but also with what is happening in distant countries and on the World Wide Web. Information provided by electronic information media compensates, expands, and supports the reality of people’s lives. In this sense, video information media are the bedrock supporting the modern world.
The goals for media are also important factors in the formation of lifestyles and in the foundations of politics, economics, society, and culture. It can be said that video/information media, and especially radio and television due to their proximity to daily life, became the infrastructures of today’s information and electronic society.
The exchanges being made on an international scale will further promote globalization. Media will evolve toward “TV Anytime Anywhere” and toward “Human-friendly TV,” by linking radio and cable networks to provide a service without restrictions based on time or other factors as to the viewer’s wishes.

Supporting a New Broadcasting Culture
It cannot be hastily decided how video transmission will affect structures in society and cultures in the long term. It is, however, a fact that having video media in people’s living rooms provides expanded opportunities for the voice of the people to be heard. Universal video information exchange is a tool for democratic societies and has contributed to the formation of a cultural structure as a lifeline for the democratic lifestyles of modern people.
The desire for Tele-Vision (to see far off) has been satisfied in a superficial sense. However, it is also true that people’s desires will not be completely filled by just seeing things that are far away. Fulfilling our desires and enriching our lives requires a review of the past, an examination of ourselves, and the ability in the future to see anything we desire at anytime and anywhere. New dreams, and the problems that need to be overcome to fulfill them, keep expanding and deepening more than ever before. By realizing people’s dreams, television engineers will remain a group that meets the challenges of developing new technologies.

1. Dreams that STRL is striving to achieve:

“Dreams” under development:

4000 scanning line TV
A prototype 4000 scanning line camera, which is required for a broadcasting system with a high sense of reality, has been manufactured.

Tactile display
A tactile display lets people with visual impairments recognize shapes instead of text in a broadcast.

Home server
A digital broadcasting receiver with a built-in hard disk will make possible ‘anytime’ viewing of information selected by the viewer.

Foldable display
A flexible, foldable display using liquid crystal will be the basis of a TV that can be rolled up for storage.
