In response to a fervent request from the Society of Motion Picture
and Television Engineers (SMPTE) in the United States, NHKs
high-definition TV system was presented at the societys
Winter Conference in San Francisco. Since it was the first presentation
of the high-definition TV system outside Japan, it attracted a
number of people from TV and movie related industries, from as
far away as Europe. It caused a big sensation. In the following
year, demonstrations were also conducted for government agencies
in Washington D.C., including the Federal Communication Commission
(FCC).
