TV broadcasting in Japan had reached over 10 million
receiving households during the nine year period from 1953 to
the end of 1962, when the NHK General TV channel went nationwide.
By 1961, more people watched TV daily than listened to the radio
(53% vs. 31% in 1962). Black-and-white TV sets were in almost
every household by 1967.
The period leading up to 1971, when the General TV channel updated
its service to all color programming, was a time that saw TV permeate
society at an explosive pace.
TV gradually acquired even greater popularity through color broadcasting
and multiple broadcast providers, drastically expanding TV programming
fields and content, and eventually creating software and roles
that would be unique to television.
