Summary of Press Conference (January, 2012)
 
On programs for the new year

(Comments by Shin Kanada, Executive Director-General of Broadcasting)
On General TV, a new lifestyle program Jouhou LIVE Tadaima! (Live information now!) will be broadcast live at 10 p.m. on Friday evenings, and a news program for the internet age, NEWS WEB 24, will start broadcasting on Tuesdays to Saturdays at midnight. In addition, a new tournament-format quiz program featuring viewers as contestants, Renzoku Quiz Hold On!, will begin on weekday afternoons at 1.05 p.m.

Educational TV will be strengthening its programming for teenagers, beginning with the R no Hosoku (the rule of R) program moving from weekly broadcasts to a Monday to Thursday at 6:55 p.m. schedule. Tohoku Hatsu - Miraijuku (Cram school of the future from the Northeast) on Fridays at 11.30 p.m. will feature ideas from the young people who experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake. Meanwhile, Heart-net TV, the successor to the Fukushi Network program, will broadcast on Mondays to Thursdays at 8 p.m. and support people who are facing difficulties and hardships in their lives.

On BS 1 'international programs that present current affairs from around the world,' 'live sports broadcasting' and 'in-depth behind the scenes reports' will be the focus of programming. Sports broadcasting in particular will use the multi-channel services, enhancing digital technology in programs. Japanese athletes going to the London Olympics will be featured in a new program Furuta Atsuya no Sports Triangle at 9 p.m. on Sundays in the first half of this year, followed by a program aimed at new running enthusiasts Run x Suma Machi no Kaze ni Nare on the last Sunday of each month (in the same time slot on Sundays in the second half of the year).
In addition, TOMORROW beyond 3.11, at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, will feature foreign celebrity fans of Japan visiting the country and giving their impressions of post-disaster Japan.

BS Premium, with the aim of being a channel delivering quality programming on culture and entertainment, will focus on female audiences in their thirties to fifties. The Morning drama serial Ume-chan Sensei (Teacher Ume) will be rebroadcast on Mondays to Saturdays, and following that at 11.15 a.m. will be Koi suru Zakka (goods that I love) on Mondays, SHA NE-RU on Tuesdays, Aphrodite no Rashinban (Aphrodite's Compass) on Wednesdays and Korean Drama: Secret Garden on Thursdays. In addition, on Saturday evenings once a month at 7 p.m. epic programs will be broadcast under the banner of The Premium. The first program will be Frozen Planet – the Last Great Wilderness, exploring the North and South Poles on April 7th, 14th and 21st. On Sundays at 10 p.m. a series of dramas that touch the heart will be broadcast in a series titled Premium Drama.

Radio 1 will deliver live broadcasting centered round the theme of 'Anshin Radio' or 'Reliable Radio.' Weekday mornings will feature lifestyle and culture information on the Suppin! (No Make-up!) program at 8 a.m. Mondays to Fridays. Weekend evenings will see broadcasts of new programs, including wktk (wakuteka) Radio Gakuen (wktk Radio Academy), that will focus on the emotions of junior high school and high school students, on Saturday and Sundays at 9 p.m. FM Radio will deliver music programs including Muse Note, where singer Hiroko Shimabukuro will present special guest artists introducing music in any easily accessible fashion.

NHK WORLD TV, the international English-language channel, will broadcast programs to the world dealing with the post-disaster recovery and rebuilding of Japan. NEWSLINE will present the latest news from around the world in English in its hourly bulletins, including news from Japan throughout the night, 24-hours a day. MAPPING KYOTO STREETS, will present the wonders of Kyoto City twice a month on Wednesdays at 11.30 a.m. Kawaii International will deliver the latest information from Japan, the home of 'Kawaii' once a month on Saturday mornings at 8.10 a.m.
As regards subtitles, most pre-recorded programming on General TV already includes this feature; NHK is now working to provide subtitles for live programs. Going forward, NHK will aim to increase live subtitling and begin to strengthen this service on channels other than General TV, according to the theme of 'Hito ni Yasahii Hoso' or 'Universal broadcasting services'.

 
On programs related to the Great East Japan Earthquake

Approaching March 11th, the one year mark since Great East Japan Earthquake, General TV will broadcast nine days of NHK Specials from March 3rd. The programs will take a deep look at the March 11th disasters centered around the theme of 'We won't forget that day' among the disaster victims, as well as 'Recovery – looking ahead to tomorrow.' Programs include Genpatsu Jiko Sono Toki Nani Ga (FUKUSHIMA- Witness to a Nuclear Disaster) on March 3rd (broadcast time to be decided); Higashi Nihon Dai Shinsai 3.11 Eizo Kiroku (The Great East Japan Earthquake- A Chronicle) (working title) on March 4th (broadcast time to be decided); Minamisoma Ki – Genpatsu Saizen Sen no Machi ni Ikiru~ (Minamisoma - Living on the Frontline of the Nuclear Disaster) (working title) on March 5th at 10 p.m.; 38-funkan – Kyodai Tsunami to Ningen no Kiroku (The 38 minutes – Testament of a Mega-Tsunami) (working title) on March 6th at 10 p.m.; Hisaisha Shiren no Fuyu – Otsuchi – Oitsumerareru Inochi~ (Winter in Otsuchi- Life on the Edge) (working title) on March 7th at 10 p.m.; Program on Nuclear Crisis (Title to be confirmed) on March 8th at 10 p.m.; Megederareneccha~ Kesennuma – Ninjou Shoutengai no Fukkatsu (Never Give Up- Revival of Kesennuma’s High Street) (working title) on March 9th at 10 p.m. For two days, on March 10th and 11th, live specials from the disaster-affected areas will be broadcast. Programs will include: Miyagi – Minami-Sanriku-Cho Prefab Chosha no Tatakai~ Fukko he Tachihadakaru Kabe~ (Battle of Beleaguered City Hall- Minamisanriku’s long road to recovery) (working title) on March 10th (broadcast time to be decided), Doujitsu Doujikoku Nama Chukei Documentary – Hisaichi no Yoru (Live Broadcast From Tohoku- On the Night of that very Day) (working title) on March 11th (broadcast time to be decided).

BS Premium will hold a 'Hokkori! Tohoku Winter' campaign that will show the best aspects of the Northeast region to the nation, and cheer up Tohoku. Christmas ni Okuru Sotsugyou Shiki – Fukushima Iitate Mura no Kodomo-tachi~ (A Christmas Gift of a Graduation Ceremony – Fukushima, Iitate Village) (working title) on February 11th at 10 p.m., featuring actor Yusuke Iseya, will follow the kindergartners and elementary school children of the village who were not able to hold a graduation ceremony (because of being evacuated due to the nuclear accident), finally hold their ceremony. Kirari!Entabi on February 22nd and 24th at 7.30 p.m. will aim to cheer up those in the disaster-affected areas with singers and celebrities visiting them and enjoying local specialities together and performing for them. On the 22nd, Kunihiro Matsumura will visit Kitakami City in Iwate Prefecture, while on the 24th, Bunchin Katsura will visit Inawashiro-cho. Kizuna Hokkori Tohoku no Nabe (Warm Human-Bond Hotpots of the Northeast) will feature visiting celebrities trying selected hotpots and show the family and community bonds of the people of Tohoku, on February 25th and 26th at 5 p.m. On the 25th, Masanori Ishii will introduce the north of Tohoku region, while Daisuke and Hanako Miyagawa will introduce the south of the region on the 26th.

 
On the NHK Special Utsu-byo wo Naose! (Cure Depression!)

On February 12th at 9 p.m. on General TV the Utsu-byo wo Naose! program will examine the phenomenon of the doubling of cases of depression over the last ten years, with the number of patients continuing to rise. The program will look at the frontline treatment of patients, focusing on Japan and America, and the process of recovery for those patients who have suffered from the disease.

 
On the Korean drama Secret Garden

Secret Garden, starting on Thursday April 5th at 11.15 p.m. on BS Premium, will feature top Korean stars Hyun-Bin and Ha Ji-won in a romantic love story. The drama recorded viewing figures as high as 37.9% in Korea and is credited with being a social phenomenon in many ways.

 
On sports satellite programming in February

The final Asian region qualifying games for national men's team for the London Olympics will be broadcast on BS1: Japan vs Syria on February 5th at 8 p.m. and Japan vs Malaysia on February 22nd at 9 p.m. The matches to be broadcast will be the last two away games for Under 23 team, which is top of Group C after winning its first three matches. In addition, the final game of the third round of qualifying games for the 2014 Brazil World Cup, against Uzbekistan, will be shown live on February 29th at 7 p.m. on BS1. Although Japan has already secured its place in the next qualifying round, all eyes will be on whether Japan can finish this round with a home victory. The 46th Superbowl, the championship-deciding game of the NFL (National Football League) America's most popular sport, will be broadcast live from Indianapolis on February 6th at 8 a.m. on BS1.
