Around half the people who died immediately after the explosion of an atomic bomb over Nagasaki in 1945 are believed to have succumbed to the shock wave, but the details long remained unclear. Then a map discovered in 2013 began shedding light on the destruction. It showed how a phenomenon called a Mach stem intensified the shock wave as it spread from the center of the explosion. NHK’s research then revealed that US authorities had calculated the Mach stem’s destructive force before dropping the bomb and that they had deliberately used it to achieve their goals. This documentary investigates the Mach stem and its catastrophic effects.
