In 1954, crewmembers on a Japanese fishing boat named the Daigo Fukuryu Maru were exposed to radiation from a US hydrogen-bomb test on Bikini Atoll. It was long suspected (but not officially acknowledged in Japan) that crewmembers on other Japanese fishing boats had also been exposed. Scientists who had spent many years studying survivors of the Hiroshima atomic bombing tried to substantiate that suspicion by looking for traces of exposure in the teeth and blood of more than 20 people who had been working on fishing boats near Bikini Atoll during the hydrogen-bomb test. Also, they obtained documents suggesting that the Daigo Fukuryu Maru was not the only exposed boat. This documentary investigates the truth about widespread radiation exposure that remained hidden throughout the Cold War nuclear arms race and beyond.
