As one of the two Japanese cities that experienced A-bombing, Nagasaki has long called on the rest of the world to remember importance of peace. Victims of the A-bombing who have led peace movements, however, are now becoming old, and passing on the inheritance of A-bomb related experiences is becoming a major concern.
Three years ago, a group of senior high school students in Nagasaki Prefecture launched a signature-collection campaign calling for the destruction of all nuclear weapons and the promotion of peace. The signatures thus collected are sent to the United Nations annually. Some of these campaigners continue to be involved in this activity even after leaving Nagasaki to enter university, eventually establishing new groups of their own. The young people at the core of these peace campaigns in two different groups had something in common: They were motivated by the fact that family members or relatives were among the victims of the A-bombing. Despite their efforts, however, wars continue to plague the world. Reality always defies their idealism.
The program conveys the zeal of Nagasaki for the attainment of peace, zeal that comes from its experience as an A-bomb victim, while focusing on the idealism in youthful peace campaigns that often collides with harsh reality.
