This edition features Heiwa Odori (Peace Avenue), which runs east to west through central Hiroshima. Many school children were on this area and lost their lives when the atomic blast occurred on 6 August 1945. The children had been mobilized for the war effort, helping clear buildings and homes in order to create firebreaks. The thoroughfare, subsequently named Peace Avenue, has twenty monuments commemorating the children. The monuments are adorned with flowers and paper cranes, and one can frequently see people stopping to offer prayers in memory of the children. The monuments are testimony of an inconsolable tragedy.
