The subject of this documentary is The Origin of Species published by Charles Darwin in the mid-19th century. As Darwin sailed around the world on the HMS Beagle he observed the ecology of various species of plants and animals. Many of his experiments conducted upon his return to the home country also remain on record. In the program various experiments were conducted to recreate Darwin’s evolution theory of the living thing in a familiar and simple manner. A seed was examined to see if it would survive in salt water likened to seawater. In another experiment a seed was tested to see if it would still sprout on new land after drifting across the sea. In an experiment on natural selection, the growth of a seed was observed. A seed planted with care on fertile land but left under natural conditions where it got affected by harmful insects, dryness, etc., showed that not all plants are able to grow, and only a strong kind of seed is able to survive. Darwin’s theory was also explained by the hypothesis of “a land with a lot of cats has a lot of clover”. In the accumulation of such experiments, young viewers are invited into the world of Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Skylark is a documentary set in a Mongolian coalmining village. The children who seek out a meager existence digging coal are called Skylarks. One such ten-year-old girl is named Suvdaa. She has a sick mother, an absent father, an aged grandfather, an elder sister and a small brother: their livelihoods rest entirely on the small girl’s shoulders. To say nothing of going to school, playing or being spoiled like a child are luxuries not permitted to Suvdaa. All her bed stricken mother wishes is that her daughter learns to read and is one day able to lead her own life. What does the future hold for her in such a temperately harsh and poverty stricken land? The technique of the television documentary as linear contents is made the best use of, and follows the girl’s life in detail, while showing the current state of dire poverty in the background with reality.

Each bulletin will carry 4 news items (3 minutes each) with the last being a citizen journalist report entitled “What have you done today to make you feel proud” where we select the best story of the week about their peers. The Ethiopian alphabet has 35 root letters, each of which takes on 7 forms with a total of 245 characters. The current approach to teaching this alphabet has children copy all 245 characters into their notebooks while repeating them aloud over and over again. They do this almost exclusively all day, every day for the first year of their education. It is a very ineffective way to teach the Ethiopian alphabet, and it leaves children disliking school and increases the drop-out rate. The current enrollment rate in grade 1 is 71% for males and 66% for females, while the primary school attendance rate is only 45% for both sexes. An estimated 68% of those students reach 5th grade. Secondary school attendance rates drop to 30% for males and 23% for females. We have developed a phonetic based, systematic, interactive, and fun approach to teach the Ethiopian alphabet. We believe this new approach will inspire creativity throughout the Ethiopian educational system. This project aims to study the Ethiopian language in a new and happy atmosphere with “Tsehai”, a popular character in Ethiopia. By using songs and animation, the program will carry a good tempo to heighten the learning effect.
