April 1, 2011
The new business year in Japan started off with deep sadness and consideration, but also with new resolve. The great earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan on March 11th, 2011, and the following accidents at the nuclear power generator claimed the precious lives and jobs of countless people, and still continues to do so. All of Japan is enveloped in sorrow, severely wounded by the harsh realities of mourning for over ten thousand deceased, the search for innumerable missing individuals, and the vast numbers of people forced to evacuate their homes.
However, endeavors to aid the survivors and to initiate reconstruction have begun here and there. These challenging efforts are not only undertaken by professionals risking their lives, but by volunteers as well, and many of these individuals are themselves still in the midst of overcoming the painful loss of loved ones.
In this time of crisis, we are stepping forth one by one as we contemplate what contributions we can make as media workers: what we can do today, and what jobs we can perform to prepare for the future. It is crucial to consider the most effective means of communicating reliable information, for the knowledge we deliver not only supports survivors of the disaster, but also serves the vital role of uniting the people of Japan. NHK fully understands the importance of this role and cooperates with online service providers to continuously convey information that is essential for rebuilding the foundations of everyday life.
Under these trying circumstances, the relief efforts and support we receive from overseas gives us great courage that cannot be expressed with words. We have received many letters of encouragement since the day of the earthquake at the JAPAN PRIZE Secretariat, as well. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation. Thank you very much for your kindness.
In response to the encouragement, the JAPAN PRIZE 2011 is scheduled to be held in October of this year. Depending on the circumstances hereafter, there is possibility of changes to the contest dates and/or methods, as well as possible reconsideration of the holding of the contest. However, even in the face of various difficulties, we believe that educational media will continue to contribute to learning and societal progress; we would like to discuss with many friends from around the world about media content and methods. In order to make this a reality this year, we will undertake every effort with determination.
We look forward to your fantastic entries. |
