Children in Ukraine - What can educational media do?

Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022. In this session, three program producers at Suspilne, the national public broadcaster of Ukraine, who have carried on broadcasting all through this national crisis, spoke online about what can be done for the children.

Anastasiia Obraztsova who was featured in the NHK Documentary, Conveying the Horrors of War: Ukraine’s Frontline Journalists, spoke about the difficulties of having to record how her country is being damaged and conveyed the importance of telling the world how bravely the adults and children of Ukraine are bearing up this war.

Viktoria Murovana who is responsible for pre-school programs spoke about how they are continuing to support children even in these difficult times. One example was a new audio program they produced so that children can listen even in bunkers and other evacuation sites.

Andriy Taranov, speaking as Suspilne’s representative, spoke about their thoughts for the children and Suspilne’s strong journalistic stance. During his speech, his own children appeared on the screen and their smiles were welcomed warmly by the audience.

The director of the NHK Documentary, Fujiwara Kazuki, closed the session, by commenting how the session was a valuable opportunity to reconsider the role of the public broadcaster at times of crisis.
