Purpose

JAPAN PRIZE aims to contribute to the development of educational broadcasting & media worldwide by awarding audiovisual materials that show high quality educational effects.

Entry Qualification

The contest is open to organizations with copyrights for the submitted entries such as:

Broadcasting services
Independent production companies
Educational institutions
Corporations
Authorized NPOs
Note: Entries from individuals are unacceptable.

Categories
(1) Pre-school Category
Educational audiovisual contents for pre-school children up to around age 6
(2) Primary Category
Educational audiovisual contents for primary school children around age 6 to 12
(3) Youth Category
Educational audiovisual contents for youths around age 12 to 17
(4) Continuing Education Category
Educational audiovisual contents to support adults for pursuing further education (around age 18 and over)
(5) Welfare Education Category
Educational audiovisual contents that contribute to the understanding of welfare and the improvement of society (applicable for any age)
(6) Innovative Media Category
Educational audiovisual contents exhibiting innovative use of its media characteristics which cannot be classified by any particular categories such as age or theme (applicable for any age)
Target Media

Audiovisual materials produced with the purpose of enhancing educational effects as follows:

A) TV programs/films/videos
B) Websites
C) Games
D) Other interactive materials
*including educational materials not classified as A, B or C and integrated packages using multiple platforms
Note:
The number of entries permitted for each organization is one entry per category.
If you submit an entry into each category, you will have a total of six submissions.
You cannot enter the same production into more than one category, even if the production utilizes different media platforms. (In the case of series, productions under the same title cannot be entered into more than one category, even if they are different episodes).
Entries must have audio-visual configurations that can be used in JAPAN PRIZE related TV programs broadcast through NHK.
Pleases be advised that submitted content that are difficult to play, reproduce, or experience during the judging process due to technical restrictions may not be judged.
Awards
(1) The Grand Prix Japan Prize
An award, certificate and US$5,000 prize money for the most outstanding work amongst all of the Audiovisual Division’s entries
(2) Prizes for the Best Work in Each Category
An award, certificate and US$2,000 prize money
Pre-school Category:
(The Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Prize)
Primary Category:
(The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize)
Youth Category:
(The Minister of Foreign Affairs Prize)
Continuing Education Category:
(The Governor of Tokyo Prize)
Welfare Education Category:
(The President of NHK Prize)
Innovative Media Category:
(The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Prize)
(3) Special Prizes
The following prizes shall be awarded to works in the Audiovisual Division. Each prize shall consist of an award, a certificate, and US$2,000 prize money.
The Maeda Prize
An excellent television program with the potential to sustainably contribute to the development of education in the country/region in a manner that reflects the founding spirit of the JAPAN PRIZE
The Japan Foundation President’s Prize
An excellent work that encourages mutual understanding among nations and races or contributes to cultural exchange
The UNICEF Prize
An excellent work that promotes understanding of the lives of children in difficult situations
Entry Conditions
(1) Number of entries
The number of entries permitted for each organization is one entry per category.
If you submit an entry into each category, you will have a total of six submissions.
You cannot enter the same production into more than one category, even if the production utilizes different media platforms. (In the case of series, productions under the same title cannot be entered into more than one category, even if they are different episodes).
(2) First broadcast, issue or circulation date
A) TV programs/films/videos
First broadcast or circulated between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. However, the same contents/episodes which were submitted to the JAPAN PRIZE 2010 cannot be re-entered.
B) Websites
Updated at least once between April 1, 2010 and July 30, 2011, and must be accessible during the judgment period (July 1-October 27, 2011) in Tokyo. However, the same version submitted to the JAPAN PRIZE 2010 cannot be re-entered.
C) Games
Initially released and made publicly available to consumers between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. However, the same version submitted to the JAPAN PRIZE 2010 cannot be re-entered.
*Please provide the most recent release date regardless of area. The organization can enter even if further distribution is planned in other areas after the contest.
* Release dates of upgrades, expansions and mission packs of previously released game software titles are not eligible. An exception is made for a different episode of a previously released titled series.
D) Other interactive materials
Initially released and made publicly available to consumers between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. However, identical versions of previously-entered productions cannot be re-entered. Please provide the most recent release date regardless of area. The organization can enter even if further distribution is planned after the contest.

(3) Language
A) TV programs/films/videos
  English only (either subtitled or dubbed if original language is not English)

  Standard languages readable by any computer operating systems, browsers, game consoles are preferable.
*The demonstration video must be in English (either subtitled or dubbed).
*If your entry has no English version, please submit a brief translation of the top page, instructions screen, recommended page(s)/screen(s), etc. (Translation samples are available here.)

(4) Copyrights
1) Entering organizations must complete all copyright clearances necessary for NHK's use of materials as specified below. (See “Use of Entered Materials”)
2) Regarding co-ownership of audiovisual materials, the entering organization must get permission for the entry from all other co-owners.
3) Entering organizations must take responsibility for any copyright problems that may arise.
How to Enter

Please read the following six items carefully before making an online entry.

(1) Entry or participation fees
There is no fee for entry, but entering organizations are responsible for
shipping/postage of deliverables. (And for return delivery, if requested)
(2) Entry acceptance April 1 – June 30, 2011
Entrants are requested to submit an online entry form (English) for each entry
through this JAPAN PRIZE Website. If you experience any difficulties entering
online, please contact the
JAPAN PRIZE Secretariat.
The content of the entry forms will be references for judging so please make
sure that you fill in all required items within the word limit.
Japanese entrants will be requested to fill out some additional items in
Japanese after the regular entry form.
(3) Material submission for preliminary selection
Required materials must reach the JAPAN PRIZE Secretariat by June 30, the deadline of online entry. Note: If materials do not reach us on time, entries may not be forwarded to the preliminary selection.

(4) Announcement of the preliminary selection
September (The date and details will be announced on this website as soon as they are determined.)
(5) Required materials for the final selection
The following materials must be submitted for shortlisted entries by October 1 (Sat).
A) TV Programs/films/videos
One videotape with the same content as the preliminary-submitted DVD in one of the following formats: BETACAM-SP, Digital BETACAM, HDCAM, or HD-D5. If the tape should be returned, please indicate that on the entry form.
B) Websites
The same demonstration video submitted for the preliminary selection in one of the following formats: BETACAM-SP, Digital BETACAM, HDCAM, HD-D5. Please consult the Secretariat if videotape is not available.
C) Game Software
The same demonstration video submitted for the preliminary selection in one of the following formats: BETACAM-SP, Digital BETACAM, HDCAM, or HD-D5. Please consult the Secretariat if videotape is not available.
D) Other interactive materials
The same demonstration video submitted for the preliminary selection in one of the following formats: BETACAM-SP, Digital BETACAM, HDCAM, or HD-D5. Please consult the Secretariat if videotape is not available.
(6) Announcement of the final judgment
October (We will announce the date and details on this website as soon as they are determined.)
Use of Entered Materials

1. NHK may use the entered materials or submitted documentation at no charge in the four ways stipulated in the following articles (1)-(4)
(1) Broadcast
a. Domestic broadcasting of entered audiovisual materials
Inclusion of clips from entered audiovisual materials in JAPAN PRIZE related programs broadcast through NHK with the purpose of contest publicity
b. Domestic Broadcasting of Prize Winners
A) TV Programs/films/videos
One broadcast through NHK of a whole or a part of the entry within Japan in a JAPAN PRIZE related program
B) Websites, C) Game software, D) Other interactive materials
One broadcast through NHK of a whole or a part of the submitted demonstration video within Japan in a JAPAN PRIZE related program
c. International Broadcast of Prize Winners
A) TV Programs/films/videos
One broadcast of the Japanese version of a prize-winning program through NHK World TV for Japanese citizens living abroad. Entering organizations will grant their own permission and obtain permission from copyrights co-owners after NHK provides time, date and format of this broadcast.
B) Websites, C) Game software, D) Other interactive materials One broadcast of the Japanese version of entered audiovisual materials or demonstration videos through NHK World TV for Japanese citizens living abroad. Entering organizations will grant their own permission and obtain permission from copyrights co-owners after NHK provides time, date and format of this broadcast.
(2) Events
a. Screening of entered materials and/or demonstration DVDs at the Awards Ceremony
b. Screening of part or all of entered materials and demonstration DVDs and exhibition of websites, educational games and interactive software at events related to the JAPAN PRIZE
c. Screening of part or all of entered materials and demonstration DVDs and exhibition of websites, educational games and interactive software at admission-free JAPAN PRIZE-related events hosted by NHK within and outside Japan
(3) JAPAN PRIZE Library
The English versions of the awarded materials and demonstration videos will be included in the JAPAN PRIZE Library. The library is non-profit and restricted to use for training and/or research purposes only, and access to these programs is limited to program producers, media researchers and educational institutions.
(4) Promotion (other than broadcast)
1. For the purpose of NHK's promotional activities and airing of the results of the contest other than broadcasting, NHK will use parts of the entered materials and demonstration DVDs in videotapes, DVDs, CDs, websites and print materials.
2. Entering organizations and organizations with common copyright ownership are deemed to have granted the JAPAN PRIZE permission regarding the above mentioned usage.
3. Entering organizations are deemed to have acquired all necessary permission regarding the above mentioned usage from all rights holders.
